Why subscribe?

If you’re interested in making the jump from academic writing to public writing and don’t know how (i.e., me in the 2010s), then this newsletter might be for you. Even if you’re just flirting with the idea of writing for public audiences (or don’t plan on trying it out for a couple years), you might find something of value here.

This isn’t a newsletter about craft. What worked for me might not work for you. Shit, I’m still trying to figure out what works. It’s not like I have a ton of bylines (the ones I do have, though, I’m really proud of).

This newsletter is me practicing. I remembered writers like Viet Thanh Nguyen and Kiese Laymon talking about how they honed their voice through writing for spaces like this. I really liked that idea. As they’ve pointed out, being a good writer means practicing sentences. A lot.

Stay up-to-date

I know people say they write for themselves. I definitely do. But I also like sharing my writing to whoever wants to read it. I got a book coming out in fall 2022, Brown and Gay in LA, and so I’ll be sharing upcoming book launch events. I’m not publishing essays at the moment because I’m working on a new book, but in case I do, I’ll be sure to share them here.

I’m not sure what this ^^^ means. It was stock text that seemed important, so I’ll leave it for now till I figure it out.
